From Istanbul with love…

Hello amigos, it’s us again: the A&A squad. Enjoy round 2 of our small travel report. 🙂

In the pretty standard and quick flight to Istanbul we were already getting hyped as we heard we will arrive at the new airport! Seen on images and Adrian’s business trip beforehands, it could just be amazing – and it was!

Architecture. OMG, how huge can an airport be? Min. 50m high ceilings, lamps with diameters of 30m and overall vast dimensions. Combined with it’s modern design it was just stunning. (Check out the pics below)

Brand stores and US food franchises. Even though I am (as you may know) not at all into brands and recognition through status, but the amount of stores was crazy. There were the typical fashion brands, electronic stores, duty free shops, cafĂ©s, restaurants, lots of US franchises (Carl’s Junior, Popeye’s, Sbarro, …) and of all of it: dozens.

Nevertheless, coming to the true core: prices. For sure they were absolutely spoiled: a 200g pack of lokum (Turkish delight) for 25 Euro? Ich glaube mein Schwein pfeift… you get 500g for ca. 1 Euro (7 Lira) at a Turkish bazar.

Self-explanatory, after taking a long walk, we decided to stay at the nap area. 6h passed in the indeed comfortable seats surrounded by sleeping travel companions.

Recharged and having enjoyed our neat self-made sandwiches, we boarded the aircraft to a unsuspected long but nice flight.

What we can say is: Turkish Airlines really is Premium.

  • All received a welcome Guacamole and fresh juice.
  • They had specialized Mexican menues for the flight.
  • The food was (honestly) really good!
  • They handed-out hygenic sets containing a tooth brush, tooth paste, sleeping mask, socks(!) and slippers (!)
  • And: they had freakin’ fragrances and body lotions at the toilets.

The only minor bummer was a classic vegetarian thing: at lunch distribution we were almost last (all good, all fine for now). But when the friendly steward reached us, they were out of Veggie pasta with only beef or pork left. In a 300 passengers plane with 3 food options, you cannot tell me that you run out of one option 50 passengers before the end?! – but yes they did. Gladly, it might show that people ultimately also chose meat-free pasta and don’t need their daily meat. (Or Turkish Airlines, just calculated it’s forecast damn-bad…).

Well, we then arrived 13h later to Mexico City ❤. Quickly exchanged some money (after surveying rates at some banks) and finally reunited with Alexis Family!!!

On the way home we went to an awesome market, had some Gorditas, Quesadillas and Nieves and let the evening slowly fade away with Sopes, veg. Pozole and cosy cafecitos.

Buenas noches y hasta mañana,

Adrián & Alexis
